The Resolution to Reform the Ballot Initiatives Process was adopted by ALEC's Civil Justice Task Force at the Spring Task Force Summit on April 21, 2006, and approved by the ALEC Board of Directors in May, 2006. ALEC has attempted to distance itself from this piece of legislation after the launch of ALECexposed.org in 2011, but it has done nothing to get it repealed in the states where it previously pushed for it to be made into law.
ALEC Resolution Text
WHEREAS, the Civil Justice Task Force recognizes that in order to preserve the integrity of the Nation’s legislative process, reforms should be made to ensure a fair state initiative process that encourages the use of the system, but prevents the process from being abused.
WHEREAS, the Civil Justice Task Force believes such reforms should include:
- Requiring more broad public support for Constitutional Amendments
- Moving up the initiative petition deadline
- Deterring petition fraud and increasing voter protection
- Requiring greater public support for initiatives that impose financial impacts on state government
- Constitutional issue relevance/Judicial Review
